Research & Learning Services: Goals and Objectives, 2010-2011
Goal One
Provide cutting-edge facilities to support research, teaching, learning, and scholarly communications in the humanities and social sciences
Objective 1: Support user needs during the Fire Safety Project
Action items:
- Develop and implement new staffing patterns for service points during the FSP
- Review, weed, and consolidate the newspaper and reference collections to support space and user needs during the FSP
- Communicate with humanities and social science departments in a clear and timely manner regarding the FSP
Goal Two
Ensure stewardship of the University’s intellectual assets.
Objective 1: Support and enhance the print and electronic collections in the humanities and social sciences
Action items:
- Enhance liaison activities to better understand and address the research and teaching needs of our primary constituents
- Continue fiscal stewardship of materials funds to strategically align acquisitions with the research and teaching needs of our primary constituents
- Work with the CUL Development and Alumni Affairs to communicate with existing donors and to identify new funding opportunities
Goal Three
Support and contribute to research, scholarship and teaching
Objective 1: Foster and participate in the growth of information competency initiatives
Action items:
- Continue to enhance ongoing instruction program
- Continue to participate in planning of and as fellows in the CUL information competency initiative
- Collaborate with other CUL units on instruction initiatives
- Develop embedded instruction librarians program
- Develop and offer workshops to support unique needs of graduate students
Objective 2: Continue to facilitate access and provide research assistance through diverse means, including face-to-face and digital reference services
Action items:
- Evaluate existing services, adjusting staffing patterns as needed
- Explore mobile technologies
- Strengthen and highlight consultation services
Objective 3: Participate in and contribute to local, regional, and national professional development opportunities, research initiatives, and publishing venues.
Action items:
- Continue to participate and provide leadership in professional committees
- Continue to contribute to research and scholarship by publishing in professional literature
- Continue to collaborate with Columbia University on the 2CUL Graduate Study
Goal Four: Communicate in a clear and timely fashion
Objective 1: Enhance communication strategies with our primary constituents
Action items:
- Collaborate closely with library communications
- Create means for electronic dissemination of news about services and collections, especially during the Fire Safety Project
- Strengthen regular, ongoing communication with social sciences and humanities departments.
Goal Five: Provide and support cutting edge technological facilities for research in the social sciences and humanities
Objective 1: Provide support for public computing needs
Action items:
- Collaborate with CUL Desktop Services to assure that public and public support computers are loaded with appropriate software
- Enhance service desk operations in support of public computing
- Continue participation in relevant committees such as PCAC
Objective 2: Assure that collection development efforts in the social sciences and humanities include appropriate electronic resources
Action items:
- Research availability of and user needs for electronic journals, databases
- Communicate changes in subscriptions for journals and databases to primary constituents in the social sciences and humanities
