Research & Learning Services: Goals and Objectives,
2012-2013

 Goal 1: In alignment with Goal II of the CUL Strategic
Plan--Increase the visibility of and access to Research & Learning Services
(R&LS) resources and services

Objectives:

  • Maximize the
    effectiveness of our discovery systems in support of the scholarship of
    faculty, students, and visiting scholars
  • Facilitate access to
    R&LS resources and CUL collections for all of our users.

 Goal 2: In alignment with Goal IV of the CUL Strategic
Plan--Strengthen the educational impact of R&LS library instruction
programs

Objectives:

  • Expand educational
    assessment efforts
  • Improve the research
    skills of our patrons through interactions at the reference desk, in
    library classes and in one-on-one consultations
  • Tailor and refine
    reference and instructional content and presentations to fit the changing
    needs of our users
  • Enhance the instruction
    training program for R&LS instructors
  • Explore and
    implement new teaching models for integrating and embedding
    librarians in the curriculum

 Goal 3: In alignment with Goal III of the CUL Strategic
Plan--Enhance Liaison Efforts across Campus

Objectives

  • Strengthen our
    relationships with departments and programs
  • Integrate and embed
    librarians into educational programming, including the course curriculum
  • Be an advocate for and
    work closely with graduate students for their scholarly needs
  • Seek partnerships to
    strengthen Cornell’s research environment and enhance opportunities for
    researchers nationally and globally
  • Seek new opportunities
    for department liaisons to partner with librarian instructors (such as
    identify new programs or initiatives in which R&LS could participate;
    look for new opportunities for establishing a virtual presence for R&LS
    librarians, subject guides, etc., on academic web sites and academic
    course sites.

 Goal 4: In alignment with Goal III of the CUL Strategic
Plan--Explore and support user needs for information management
at all
levels

Objectives:

  • Guide our users through
    their information management needs – managing citations, managing and
    organizing information (materials collected during the research process),
    managing and using datasets, etc.
  • Partner with other on
    campus groups who are involved with data support
  • Continue to develop
    expertise in data management

 Goal 5: In alignment with Goal VI of the CUL Strategic
Plan--Expand RLS’s reach through public engagement

Objectives:

  • Amplify the outreach
    mission of Cornell University and the Cornell University Library
  • Extend and project
    R&LS knowledge and expertise beyond the walls of Olin and Uris
    Libraries
  •  Increase the
    visibility and "findability" of R&LS staff and the services
    they provide on and off campus
  •  Integrate R&LS
    staff and services within Cornell's teaching and research communities

Goal 6:  In alignment with Goal VII of the CUL
Strategic Plan--Promote a climate that helps R&LS staff succeed in a
changing environment

Objectives:

  • Foster mutual support
    and collaborative engagement within R&LS
  • Empower staff to develop
    the skills and knowledge necessary to better assist our users with their
    research needs
  • Engage staff in
    articulating the distinctive strengths of their units as well as effective
    shared practices across the library system
  • Collaborate with CUL
    colleagues to strengthen our mutual understanding of resources and
    research needs across disciplines
  • Foster, encourage, and
    reward innovative experimentation

 Goal 7:  In alignment with Goal I of the CUL
Strategic Plan--Ensure access to the full scholarly record for the Cornell
community

Objectives:

  • Continue to identify and
    evaluate resources to support the research needs of our users
  • Continue to develop
    relationships with Columbia University and Borrow Direct libraries
  • Assess new models for
    collection building
  • Employ effective budget
    management strategies while building and maintaining a strong research
    collection
