How to use IMB with an EndNote filter

Downloading records from the International Medieval Bibliography (online):

1. For best results in searching IMB, use Internet Explorer.

2. From the search results (hitlist) screen, mark records you want (default is all records marked; to unmark all the records, click the box at the top of the column of boxes, next to author).

3. Click the click "here" link at the top of the hitlist/results screen (in the line that says "To scroll through the selected documents click 'here.'")

4. Under file in the browser's tool bar, choose save as.

5. Name the file (and save it to the desktop for convenience's sake or some other place that you'll be able to find later).

6. For "save as type" choose txt file. (Leave encoding as UTF-8.)

7. Download the filter into your EndNote program's filters folder.

8. Open EndNote, choose import under the file menu. Find the text file you created, find the IMB filter you downloaded and import into an open EndNote library (leave encoding at UTF-8)..

Please note:

This filter created to work with EndNote X2, August 2008 by Virginia Cole, Librarian, Cornell University.

--------------------------------------------
Because EndNote cannot understand IMB's different types of references/materials, this filter is imperfect, but still far more efficient than manually copying and pasting.

All records are imported as the default reference type "Book Section."

Users must manually change each reference to the proper reference type. IMB's original type of reference is imported into EndNote's "Label" field.

Specific oddities of particular reference types:

Journal articles--Once you change the reference from "Book Section" to "Journal Article" reference type, article title will appear in "Start Page" field. Cut and paste it into "Title" field; Cut and copy journal title from "Title" into "Journal" field.

Edited book--Names of mulitple editors will appear on one line; manually put a return between names and fix capitalization.
