From May to September 2018, Library users were invited to record their thoughts on vintage typewriters set up in Olin and Uris libraries.
The 1973 Smith-Corona Portable Typewriter
on loan from librarian Fred Muratori, was outside Libe Cafe in Olin. Inspired by “Notes from a Public Typewriter,” the typewriters allowed Cornellians to connect with each other and the past. If someone had already typed on a page, users were invited to leave some space and continue with their own narratives, adding pages as needed. The Library has archived these sheets of paper.
The LC-Smith Typewriter
1915-25 L.C. Smith & Bros., owned by Mann Library, was in the Uris lobby. Inspired by “Notes from a Public Typewriter,” the typewriters allowed Cornellians to connect with each other and the past. If someone had already typed on a page, users were invited to leave some space and continue with their own narratives, adding pages as needed. The Library has archived these sheets of paper.
