Olin and Kroch Library Research Studies
These small studies, located on levels 4 through 7 of Olin Library and on Level B of Kroch Library, are intended to help faculty and post-A-exam graduate students who are actively and heavily using the print collections housed in Olin, Kroch, and Uris libraries. They are assigned each year based on applications. We maintain a waiting list as needed.
Please contact Library Public Services at (607) 255-5069 or okcarrels@cornell.edu with any questions.
Please note: Events held in Kroch Library or the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections may, at times, cause some disruptive noise. Whenever possible, we will notify Kroch research study holders via email in advance when this is expected to occur.
Research Study Policies
Purpose and Eligibility
Library research studies are assigned for specific research projects only and may not be used as additional office or meeting space. They are assigned on the basis of availability and according to the following priorities:
- Faculty working toward tenure and graduate students who have completed their A exams, are actively working toward completing their dissertations, and do not have office space on campus. Faculty with book contracts and other time-sensitive research commitments will also be considered.
- Those whose research involves the use of a large number of print items in the Library’s collections.
- Post-A-exam graduate students working on their dissertations who have no private office space on campus.
- We will take into account any potential need for ADA accommodations.
Space Assignments

Research studies will most commonly be shared. Joint applications are encouraged.
Research studies are assigned to specific individuals and is for the sole use of those to whom it is formally assigned. It may not be shared informally with colleagues, students, or research associates of the assignee.
Each faculty member assigned research space will be issued an individual, non-transferable key upon receipt of a one-time non-refundable fee of $30.
Renewals
Those who are assigned research studies and who wish to reapply for their studies must file an online application at the beginning of each Fall Semester. Assignment is contingent upon continued need and use of the research space. Failure to reapply in a timely manner will be considered an indication that the space is no longer needed and is available for re-assignment. Any personal materials left will be returned to the researcher’s department.
The Library is not responsible for loss or damage to any personal items left in research studies.
