Olin and Kroch Library Research Studies

These small studies, located on levels 4 through 7 of Olin Library and on Level B of Kroch Library, are intended to help faculty and post-A-exam graduate students who are actively and heavily using the print collections housed in Olin, Kroch, and Uris libraries. They are assigned each year based on applications. We maintain a waiting list as needed.

Please contact okcarrels@cornell.edu with any questions.

Please note: Events held in Kroch Library or the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections may, at times, cause some disruptive noise. Whenever possible, we will notify Kroch research study holders via email in advance when this is expected to occur.

Research Study Policies

Purpose and Eligibility

Library research studies are assigned for specific research projects only and may not be used as additional office or meeting space. They are assigned on the basis of availability and according to the following priorities:

  • Faculty working toward tenure and graduate students who have completed their A exams, are actively working toward completing their dissertations, and do not have office space on campus. Faculty with book contracts and other time-sensitive research commitments will also be considered.
  • Those whose research involves the use of a large number of print items in the Library’s collections.
  • Post-A-exam graduate students working on their dissertations who have no private office space on campus.
  • We will take into account any potential need for ADA accommodations.

Space Assignments

Research studies will most commonly be shared. Joint applications are encouraged.

Research studies are assigned to specific individuals and are for the sole use of those to whom they are formally assigned. They may not be shared informally with colleagues, students, or research associates of the assignee.

Each faculty member or graduate student assigned to a research space will be issued an individual, non-transferable key. If key is lost, a $30.00 one-time, non-refundable fee will be required when the replacement key is picked up from the Olin Library Information desk.

Renewals

Faculty who are assigned research studies and who wish to reapply for their studies must file an online application each Fall semester during the renewal period.

Graduate students who wish to reapply for their studies must sign a renewal form in person at the Olin Library Information desk during the renewal period. Assignment is contingent upon continued need and use of the research space. Failure to reapply in a timely manner will be considered an indication that the space is no longer needed and is available for re-assignment.

Any personal materials left will be returned to the researcher’s department or held in Olin Library’s Lost and Found for 3 days. The Library is not responsible for loss or damage to any personal items left in research studies.

Charging Materials to a Research Study

What can be charged to a research study?

  • Regular loan items from any library, including the Library Annex, may be charged to the research study.
    • A few flyers can be found in your assignment packet to get you started; ask at the information desk if you need more.
    • Please fill out the salmon colored flyers with your name, research study number, and call number of the item you want to charge out and leave the book on the desk top.
    • Turn your red/white door tab to the red side to indicate service needs.
  • If you find a book without a barcode:
    •  Insert a completed salmon colored flyer and leave the book in plain view on the desktop with a note to indicate the book has no barcode.
    • Turn your door tab to the red side. Library staff will bring the book down to circulation for it to be barcoded and return it to the research study. It may take at least one day before the book is returned.

Reference books, unbound periodicals, and bound periodicals published more than twice per year and reference books, may not be charged to the research study.
